Derisa’s Learning Journal II

What is your unique gift? – Do you believe in it enough to invest everything you have in it?

My unique gift is my ability to disrupt the status quo. By doing things my own way I bring new ideas to the floor, challenge pre-established rules and conditions, and present a confidence that exudes through my actions, music and my work.

  • My unique gift is having an eye and ear for talent. The hands-on experience I have had in the industry and my ability to create makes me unique.

What difference are you trying to make in the world? – How passionate are you about doing this?

The mark I want to leave on the world has always and will remain the same; I want to make people dance! As odd and cliché as that sounds that’s all I really want. I want to make people feel good. I want to write music that becomes the soundtrack to people’s lives, create experiences and opportunities for people so they can in turn create the life that they always dreamed about.

  • I want to create something that will be here long after I am gone. I want to help people through music, provide jobs, as well as goods and services to the public. Being able to give opportunities that I did not have will make all the difference.

How do you define success for yourself? – What challenges do you face in order to create success?

Success to me is a feeling rather than something tangible. I am successful when I am making progress big or small. The goal is to always better than day before. We are constantly faced with obstacles during the journey but the ability to overcome those trials, re-strategize, and being able to tell the tale is the real reward.

  • Success is overcoming challenges and surpassing the goals I have set for myself while maintain my mental and spiritual well-being.

What is career vision and a mission?

A career vision is where one sees themselves in a few years and what they hope to achieve. It is knowing your core values, establishing your goals and staying on course. A mission is a concise statement that describes one’s goals but more importantly putting action behind the statement.

  • Start my own full service entertainment company that will host producers, songwriters, and creatives alike. Invest in real estate and open business that will provide goods and services to the public as well as be able to express myself creatively through other avenues such as fashion.

Can you innovate and create value and successfully communicate that value to intended audiences?

Yes, I do believe I can accomplish such. My ethnic background (West-Indian), and the experiences I have had growing up in an environment much different from many of my peers allows me to view situations from diverse perspectives, provide new and innovative ideas, and appeal to audience by introducing the different genres of music that I have been influenced by into my production and performing engagements.

  • I can create value through the products and services that I will provide by giving my intended audiences the highest quality available. Living in the United States and growing up in the Caribbean has prepared me to be able to communicate to people from all over the world.

Do you have a positive attitude?

Yes, I do because I am a firm believer of the saying “What is meant to be will always find its way.” Growing up in the Caribbean the virtues of our elders became ours; those of which were to be kind to everyone and in everything you do always have faith. Moving to the mainland I kept my virtues the same. Having a positive attitude and a corresponding personality has opened doors for me in the entertainment industry and will most likely continue in the near future.

  • My answer is the same as above.

Have you set your goals? What is your road map to success? Can you set inspiring and realistic goals?

I have both long and short term goals set, how I plan to achieve them is a where the road map gets blurred; the best thing I have learned over the years is to just start and things will begin to come together. The word “realistic” has no power nor does it exist in my vocabulary. When the topic of realism is discussed the inner child/creative dies. Hence, I try to set inspiring goals, ones that will elevate me to new heights, challenge me to relinquish fear and dissolve the bubble I tend to reside in from time to time. Having a vision board makes my goals clearer and holds me accountable to things I want to accomplish.

  • I have set long and short term goals for myself. I believe now more than ever I am holding myself to those goals and pushing myself to just take the first step. I have created a three-year road map and a list of goals that involve me creating my own lane in the industry.

Do you have and/or acquire the necessary expertise to actualize your vision?

I am in the process of doing so. While I may not be a finished product the experiences I have had along with the courses I am currently enrolled in will take me one step closer. I am becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable.

  • Answer is the same as above

What are your priorities? Can you set priorities?

Yes, I can set priorities but sometimes I have a hard time following them. I am young and sometimes it becomes difficult to find a balance between my social and professional life. My number one priority right now is to finish school. While completing my degree I am learning to make myself and my future a top priority and self-invest.

  • I have struggled for years on how to prioritize but I am getting better.

What opportunities are you looking for? What opportunities are you creating or intend to create?

I am looking for opportunities to write and produce for artist or just be a part of the creative process in bringing their ideas to life. I am also looking for an opportunity to elevate other artist careers. I would love to have a conversation with industry executives whose career visions align with mine.

  • Answer is the same of above.

How comfortable are you with uncertainty? What risks are you willing to take?

I am very comfortable with being uncomfortable. The past couple years of my life have been filled with uncertainty, from moving to the states, adapting to new culture, to spending the summer working without compensation in a recording studio so I can gain knowledge with experienced professionals. The risk I have taken in recent years have prepared me for anything. I willing to move to a new city, adapt to my surroundings if it means that I can fulfill my dreams.

  • I am very comfortable with being uncomfortable. The past couple years of my life have been filled with uncertainty. Now as I prepare to head into the work force I am forced to create opportunities and make things happen.

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

The past couple of months especially have been dedicated to consistency and discipline. So, when faced with challenges I always take time to relax my mind, evaluate the situation, and re-strategize. If it is something I have a vast amount of interest in I always persevere. This mainly because I do not enjoy losing.

  • The answer is the same as above.

What experience have you learned the most from?

I cannot say there is one experience that I learned a lot from rather a culmination of events that lead to a “Ah Ha” moment. Within the last year there have been drastic changes to the life that I have known so well. These experiences have taught me that I am a lot stronger than I think I am and it is time to start getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.

  • The experience I have learned from the most was the summer of 2018 when I did an internship at a music studio in Atlanta. I learned that no one is going to give you anything and that you have to create your own opportunities. Everything is hard work but if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life.

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

I am bringing my vision to life by investing in myself. If I do not take a risk when it comes to my career and future who will? I am actively taking steps every day to get better in my field of interest. I am listening to new music, conversing with people who are actively doing what I want to do, reading the articles, and perfecting my craft. In turn, I am seeing progress.

  • Answer is the same as above

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

I am excellent when it comes to putting stuff into context and adjusting to changes in my environment. Although I can give many examples the best one I have experienced is having my island and my home destroyed after two category 5 hurricanes in 2017. Having to go back home over the holidays to a place that did not have power or running water in certain areas, torn families, communities, poor health care facilities made me realize how privileged I am and how I have taken things for granted in the past. There was no one to blame for the natural disaster rather I had to adjust to a new way a life and rebuild. That experience set precedence for the years to come.

  • Answer is the same as above.

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in there past year or three?

My plan to grow at a steady pace is to continue studying the masters in the field and take risk.  I plan to be more efficient with my time and produce more content. By doing that I can have more to bring to the table and improve steadily.

  • I have grown so much in the past three years and my time at Jacksonville University has played a major role in that. I am more independent, I am able to prioritize better, and I have a better understanding of myself. I will continue to grow by taking risk, pushing myself, and never giving up.

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

This is something I probably have the greatest challenge doing. I have always had trouble asking anyone for anything (it may be a cultural thing). In the past, there were projects that I needed monetary support from the community; I left that part to my team.

  • I am getting better at reaching out and asking others for help; learning to put my pride aside. Nothing can be accomplished alone.

How are you inspiring others to join and/or support your mission in order to create a financially sustainable enterprise that allows you to live your gift and contribute something valuable to society? – If you aren’t currently, how do you intend to?

Currently I am not doing so, however I plan to by writing business proposals to gain funding from companies and people who can finance my projects. I will do it in a way that both parties can benefit from the endeavor. I will paint my vision to my audience so they can see what I see and be inspired to also be great.

  • After completing an assignment that has forced me to write down my goals and be honest with myself I am now taking the steps to submit to grants and write proposals so I can fund my projects. I plan to see my vision all the way through, create art work that will be here long after I am gone and never give up.

Chris Smith Learning Journal II

Below are my answers from the previous Learning Journal assignment with my follow up preceding each response.

What is your unique gift? – Do you believe in it enough to invest everything you have in it?

My unique gift is my craftsmanship. I would like to invest everything I have in my gift, but I’d like to also diversify my skills. I do not currently have all the skills necessary to run a fully functioning business in which I could utilize my craftsmanship, but I’d like to do so in the future.

  • I have continued to place a strong focus on building my skill base. Everything I have done outside of academics and performances on campus has been geared towards building a future career.

What difference are you trying to make in the world? – How passionate are you about doing this?

I would like to see a greater variety of instrument options offered to consumers in music stores. When visiting local music stores I found the number of percussion and drum products disappointing. This issue is something that has frustrated me for almost the entirety of my career as a musician.

  • Continually seeking out smaller issues in the drum industry that I can remedy with my designs and approach with my own business.

How do you define success for yourself? – What challenges do you face in order to create success?

I define success based off my personal growth. The challenges I would face are my own thoughts and insecurities and other people’s opinions towards my goals.

  • I’ve since sought out new ways to stay motivated when faced with harsh criticism from outside sources. I’ve found that simply staying focused on your goals helps you to silence any negative thoughts.

What is career vision and a mission?

My career vision is to open a business that offers the aforementioned diversity in instruments so many of the music stores lack.

  • My vision has remained the same since first answering this question. I’d like to expand on this without straying too far from my initial goals.

Can you innovate and create value and successfully communicate that value to intended audiences?

I can communicate value through my marketing, pricing, and mission statement. I would like value to be a primary focus for my business model.

  • This continues to be a huge priority for my business model. I want my customers to understand what they are investing in is worth everything they paid for.

Do you have a positive attitude?

I strive to have a positive attitude especially when surrounded by others.

  • I believe a positive outlook is absolutely necessary in building a lasting business and in interactions with others.

Have you set your goals? What is your road map to success? Can you set inspiring and realistic goals?

I have set many short term goals for my business but would like to come up with a solid road map for the future. I believe I have the capacity to set these goals and pursue them to completion.

  • I have not yet established a solid roadmap but am in the process.

Do you have and/or acquire the necessary expertise to actualize your vision?

I have many of the necessary skills I need to create my instruments, but I want to constantly evolve and network with others that have the skills I am looking to acquire in the future.

  • I have become involved in two outside groups since last writing this answer. These groups have allowed me to grow in areas necessary to actualizing my vision.

What are your priorities? Can you set priorities?

My priority is to share my creative vision with others. I can set my priorities easily when they pertain to my passion but I would like to get better at prioritizing things that do not directly correlate with what I am pursuing.

  • This is still a constant struggle but something I am continually trying to get better at.

What opportunities are you looking for? What opportunities are you creating or intend to create?

I’m looking to grow my marketing and sales experience. I’m currently looking for a job in sales that would prepare me for owning my own business.

How comfortable are you with uncertainty? What risks are you willing to take?

I struggle with uncertainty but believe I will become more comfortable with it the more time I spend in the realm of uncertainty. Part of this process is taking risks so I plan on trying new design ideas out and collaborating with other artists.

  • I’m beginning to become more aware that this is a business of uncertainties but that with hard work along with constantly setting goals for myself, I can make a name for myself.

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

I would like to develop greater perseverance. I am guilty of walking away when faced with challenges but I try to always come back and hit them with greater tenacity the second time around.

  • Constantly striving for greater perseverance.

What experience have you learned the most from?

I learned the most from my internship at Coe Percussion in Tallahassee, FL.

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

I’m constantly seeking out new inspiration for instruments and projects. I try to devote at least an hour each day to research and development. I also consistently search for networking opportunities.

  • I have become involved with two bands that have been amazing creative outlets for me. These groups also allow me to promote my instruments and my business to those who take notice. The members of my groups are supportive of my business and help me to network.

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

I sometimes struggle to put things into context but almost always grasp the concept after some time. I have always prided myself on adapting to whatever scenario I find myself in. I relocated to Tallahassee, FL over the summer of 2018 and was quickly able to surround myself with a group of people interested in my work and had skills that complimented my own.

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in the past year or three?

I plan to continue educating myself through additional sources once I’m out of college. I believe I have learned how to properly accept criticism and apply it to my work.

  • I’ve become more aware of my strengths and weaknesses and how to apply them in various situations.

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

I typically do not struggle with getting help. I have realized there is nothing more important than admitting you need help when you are all out of ideas.

  • I believe this has helped me in some very difficult situations. I never want to become so stubborn that I am opposed to getting feedback.

Taylor’s Networking Assignment II

In reflecting on the first networking assignment, I’ve learned that it is highly beneficial to prepare for networking at the events I attend. For example, if I am going to attend or play at a show, I will research the other bands playing and get to know more about them, the venue, and the person booking the show. This will give me an idea of things to talk about at the show and will make triangulating easier. Although some shows are better to network at than others, there is a lot I can get from these events that is very easy to miss. Going out of my way to chat with the sound engineer is another important networking opportunity. Outside of shows, I’ve found more forms of networking that proved to be beneficial.
I recently reached out to an engineer at Audiotree, the studio I’ve admired for the past three years, through his own website. I was searching for websites to get inspirations for my own and I found the website of Brok Mende. He is a full time freelance audio/mixing/mastering engineer that grew up in Jacksonville and moved to Chicago in 2012 to pursue a career in the industry. He’s interned with Steve Albini and worked his ass off to get recognized as an engineer in Chicago. From there he got offered the job at Audiotree as head engineer, but recently resigned to move back to Jacksonville to be with family for personal reasons. In my initial email through his contact page on his website, I introduced myself and said a little about what I’m doing here at JU and the projects I’ve been involved in. I mentioned my recent work with a mutual friend Corey Kilgannon, who is a singer songwriter that’s recorded with Brok in the past. After establishing my connection with a mutual friend and triangulating through that, I asked him if I could send him some questions about the industry, his workflow, and some other general inquiries. Within the same day he responded “Corey’s a good friend of mine, feel free to shoot me whatever questions you might have!” From there I asked him about his career path and what he would go back and change along the way to set himself up for where he is today, as well as some brief general questions about his perspective of the Jacksonville music scene and why he left to Chicago. He responded in five paragraphs in detail to all of my questions and asked if I had any more for him, which I did. After sending him some more questions, I also invited him to come to the next Bobby Kid show, which was conveniently opening up for our mutual friend Corey at Blue Jay Listening Room (Sunday 4/28). He was already planning on coming and actually recording this session, so everything really worked out for the best in this networking experience. After my last email with a plethora of questions he asked to meet up this week and chat in person. I am hoping to gain more understanding of his career and perspective, as well as inquire more about the Audiotree internship program, or any other potential internship opportunities.

Brok complimented my wording of questions, and could tell that I knew what I wanted to get out of the interaction with him. If I wouldn’t have triangulated and made the connection with our mutual friend, there’s a chance he wouldn’t have followed up with me.

I’m looking forward to planning for networking ahead of time at the next events I attend, and looking for places outside of those events to connect with people I admire and want to emulate.

Internal Funding Request

https://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/about_us

For my Internal Funding Request I am applying for The Awesome Foundation’s grant. This foundation has very limitations and is souly a foundation that is for funding awesome projects. These grants are giving 1000 dollars at a time. I would use this money to help fund Jacksonville University’s Recording Studio. This would help us buy equipment and would essentially give our studio a name! I would discuss how we are constantly recording music that is engaging and is important for our community. I would talk about all of the projects that are coming out of the studio including, Cheesman’s Album , Lillian Snyder’s Album , DeAndre’s Album , Jazz Combo One’s Album , The Jazz Faculty’s Album and Prof. Beasley and the Voice Lab Students.

I would discuss all of the work we do as Dolphinium Records for our Artist including Promotion and Marketing. I would talk about our strides we intend on making as a Label.

Over I would discuss how AWESOME (pun intended) we are as a label and what we bring to the table.

I fully Intend on submitting this project once I gain more Information on the Foundation.

Learning Journal 2: More learning, more journaling (Isabella Martinez)

What is your unique gift? – Do you believe in it enough to invest everything you have in it?

My unique gift is communicating with people. Whether it’s through theatre, music, or just a face to face conversation, I leave a good impression on people. I’m investing in it a lot more than I was when I first started this assignment. Since then I’ve explored opportunities outside of theatre and music and broadened my job possibilities.

What difference are you trying to make in the world? – How passionate are you about doing this?

I want to be the comedic relief of this world. There’s so much bullshit going on these days. Trump, the Republicans, the poor detained immigrant children, war… to put it bluntly, the world sucks right now. I’d like to be a source of light and levity to distract people from that. To make them laugh or smile for an hour and remember that there is good in this world and that things will turn around eventually (even though I’m not quite sure if that’s true).

How do you define success for yourself? – What challenges do you face in order to create success?

My definition of success has changed over the last few months. Yes, ideally I would like to be able to support myself with my art. But as I’ve gotten to know more artists, watched more interviews, read more articles, I’ve found out that it’s not very common to live off of your art. Most people have three or four jobs. And honestly, I’d be fine with that. As long as one of those jobs is in music or theatre, I’d be okay with that. There are a lot of challenges I face (ie, finding said jobs), but I know that I am fully capable of overcoming these obstacles.

What is career vision and a mission?

Career vision: how you hope your career will turn out.

Mission: The steps you take to get to your career vision.

I’m not quite sure what I want my career to be. I want to do a little bit of everything. I guess I’ve still maintained a child-like wonder for the arts. I want to keep exploring every nook and cranny until I’ve run out of things that interest me. I guess I used to have a career vision, but now I’m just hoping that I can move to Atlanta, audition everywhere and hope that things go well. I’m not too stressed about it.

Can you innovate and creates value and successfully communicate that value to intended audiences?

Yes.

Do you have a positive attitude?

Yes.

Have you set your goals? What is your road map to success? Can you set inspiring and realistic goals?

My goals are a little more nebulous than they were at the start of the semester. I wanted to finish the play I was writing and have it produced. I’d even talked to a local producer about having the show fully staged by 2020. I’m still working on that play, but I’m not sure if that’s what I want anymore. I know that I’m capable of setting realistic and inspiring goals, but I’m not quite sure what I want to do anymore. I think that’s okay for now. After all, I’ve still got a year of college left.

Do you have and/or acquire the necessary expertise to actualize your vision?

I think one of the most important attributes to have in this industry is a good attitude and confidence. I was reading a blog for directors and producers the other day, and someone who was a first time producer was asking how she could prove herself and show people that she knew what she was doing when she had never produced a show before. Most people had the same advice. “Honestly, just pretend you know what you’re doing. Most first time directors don’t know their directing style until they actually get out there and start working.” I guess it was kind of relieving to read that many professionals didn’t know what they were doing at the start of their careers. So even though I’m at a weird point of not knowing what I want out of career, I think I have the right attitude and mindset to be able to accomplish whatever new dream comes my way.

What are your priorities? Can you set priorities?

I am still learning how to set my priorities. In the past, I’ve prioritized other people and their happiness rather than focusing on myself. I used to leap at every opportunity that came my way. I was afraid that if I turned someone down, I would stop getting offers. That didn’t happen. What did happen was that I got overwhelmed and stretched thin and didn’t end up producing my best work. So now my new priority is me. Will this opportunity benefit my personal/career growth? If so, then yes, I can make room for it. If not, then I’ll have to pass.

What opportunities are you looking for? What opportunities are you creating or intend to create?

I’m looking to learn how to produce and direct theatre and encourage diversity and diverse storytelling. I’ve been looking at apprenticeships in Georgia and theatre residencies across the U.S. There are a few programs that are specifically marketed toward new directors and producers, and those have caught my eye. The programs only last a few weeks, but I’m hoping that they will allow me to network with some new people and add some skills and experience to my resume.

How comfortable are you with uncertainty? What risks are you willing to take?

I have recently become very comfortable with uncertainty. In the artistic world, uncertainty is waiting for you around every corner. I’ve changed my mind about my career hundreds of times in the past few years and it’s led me to be very uncertain about what exactly the future has in store for me. But you know what? I’m still here! I’m alive. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’ve survived so far, and that makes me think that future Isabella (whatever it is that she ends up doing) will be okay. I’m willing to take a lot of risks! I’m ready to drop my things and move to a new city at the drop of a hat.

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

What experience have you learned the most from?

It depends on the challenge, but I usually persevere. There are a lot of challenges I’ve faced during the last three years of college, but the one that has shaped me the most has been my battle with depression. This is not some sad boohoo “oh I’m cured, theatre saved my life!” story (but it kind of is). Anyway, there have been several moments in the last year where I’ve felt like I couldn’t make it through college. I skipped days and sometimes even an entire week of classes because I couldn’t pry myself out of bed. I still have days like that, but they are far and few between. I have always found that throwing myself into a musical or a new artistic/creative project has given me purpose and reason to go on. Which is cool.

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

Now that my senior year of college is coming up, I have a lot of auditions that I am planning and preparing for. Hopefully I’ll get a few job offers, but I’m hoping that I will book an apprenticeship at a theatre or maybe even a tour. If those things don’t happen, I still have some backup options. I’m constantly updating my musical repertoire and my arsenal of monologues. I need some new headshots, and then I’ll be ready for audition season.

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

I think I respond well to changes in my environment. I used to work at a smoothie shop and when we had a change in management, my coworkers had a tough time adjusting to our new boss. To be fair, he was kind of an asshole. They got annoyed and complained about him continuously. But I just kept working and tried to find a silver lining. Yes, he was kind of condescending, but his customer service skills were very good and I could always learn from his example. I think my attitude has gotten me through a lot of drastic changes in my life. Even when things are going to shit, I can always find the humor in the situation.

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in the past year or three?

I think I’ve definitely grown in the past few years. How will I continue to grow? Here’s something I heard at a workshop in February. “I like to push my boundaries by putting myself in environments where I feel uncomfortable”. The only way to learn and grow is to do things that make you nervous or scare you. I think I’ve started doing that lately and I think that if I keep doing it, it will pay off.

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

I’m alright at asking for help. I should ask more often.

I am willing to take chances with my employees and push them through encouragement.  I am willing to move locations and go wherever the best place is to be for my business.

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

I persevere, It is not like me to quit. One of the hardest things I have done is that I have ran a marathon. I wanted to quit and although that would’ve been the easy thing to do; the reward is worth the pain. I leave you with this quote;  Like the marathon, life can sometimes be difficult, challenging and present obstacles, however if you believe in your dreams and never ever give up, things will turn out for the best.- Keflezigh

What experience have you learned the most from?

I have quite a few experience I have learned alot from, It’s hard to pinpoint one. I learned alot from quitting my job in 2017, for awhile I believed that quitting was a sign of weakness. I was loyal to this company and my co-worker, and at one point I was being taken advantage of. I thought if I quit I would be looked at as a “quitter”. But I learned that sometimes walking away is one of the bravest and couragous thing someone can do.

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

With having the goal of one day owning a  recording studio, I thought that it would be a good Idea to get involved with the student-ran record label, I am now the Label’s President. Almost every day, I am thinking of ways we can improve as a label, I stay in contact with our artist, and I am always finding ways I can distribute the work between our Label Members.

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

I believe my understanding of my position can sometimes be faded. When I quit my job in 2017 it was hard to understand why that happened and why people treated me the way they treated me.  But I am slowly learning to be more adaptable to change and be more open to change.

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in there past year or three?

My plan is to continually be learning and researching. I have grown a lot in these past three years, I used to be very anxious in positions of leadership. I used to be worried that I wasn’t doing something right or if I made a wrong move everything would fall apart. I have gained so much confidence in myself, I have learned how to be a better networker and overall a better communicator between the things I am apart of.

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

Reaching out for help is something that I am getting better about. I used to be very stubborn about this, before I wanted to figure everything out on my own and I didnt want help from anyone. But I am learning, the record label has help alot with this. I had to accept the fact that this is something that can’t all be done by myself, I have to had to ask for help for different task and learn how to put my trust in others.

How are you inspiring others to join and/or support your mission in order to create a financially sustainable enterprise that allows you to live your gift and contribute something valuable to society? – If you aren’t currently, how do you intend to?

I am inspiring others by always sharing my ideas. I am always creating content that is good quality and I am always taking courageous acts in my position of leadership. I intend to always put “my all” into whatever it is I am doing and I am always will to take risk through my actions. I intend to inspire my community by producing music that is relatable, inspiring and encouraging,

Project Details

Project Name: The Grant Grant Project

Abstract: Searching for a grant to support an event for young local artists to showcase a number of projects and collaborations. This event is a way to bring together different aspects of the local arts scene, from visual to digital arts, music and spoken word. The event will need to take place in a venue that can fit 150-250 people. We will need a budget for renting the space, a sound system, and lighting. The profit we make from ticket sales can go to paying the artists. We will have a stage area for bands, an area for spoken word artists, and an area for visual artists to present and sell their work, and a projector set up for a film showcase. By getting a diverse variety of artists involved in different aspects of local art, this event will serve as a supportive networking event for artists to step out of the comfort of their scene and be introduced to all of the other amazing work happening around the city of Jacksonville. The majority of artists involved will be students and young adults from all over Jacksonville. This event will show the impact that young artists have on the arts culture of Jax.

Networking Assignment ll

Networking Assignment

On March 22nd at 8oclock I attended a Concert at Rain Dogs with Dolphinium Records as the launch of our “A&R Nights”. These nights are aimed to help promote A&R within our label. The bands we saw that night included Hensley, Primary School, Teen Divorce, and  EJ Harvey. Overall this event was an incredible experience and It was nice to hear the music that that lives here in Jacksonville. I talk with a few people that night, the first one was Devon. Devon is a future student of Jacksonville University. Devon’s dad works with the bands here in Jacksonville, I forget his actual title; but he has quite a few connections. We continued to elaborate on the bands that performed that night, we talked about the diversity between each band and how we have similar connections through Jacksonville University. We both have met Daniel Hubert (the bassest of Primary School and Teen Divorce) and Chris Smith (The drummer of Primary School). As Dolphinium we had a short discussion with Hensley, we explained to them how we are a student ran record label and we also  complimented them on the great work they were doing. I also had a discussion with Daniel Hubert on how Primary School branched out from the band Bobby Kid and how they were

a major influence for them.

Overall it was a great night, full of great music. The music that night was mostly Alternative and Indie. This was a great networking opportunity for not only me but for Dolphinium Records as a whole. We hope to continue to branch out and gain more connections through our work.
