Artist Case Study- Landon Blackburn on Ari Hoenig

I chose to use my favorite modern drummer, Ari Hoenig, as the artist for my case study.

Ari Hoenig is one of the most unique musicians in the field today. He is a musician of few words but with great depth and intellect. Aside from being a drummer Ari is a, band leader, educator, entrepreneur and composer/arranger. Aside from being one of my favorite drummers, I specifically chose Ari because he does exactly what I want to do. Which is play music and create with others. Ari attributes his success to hard work and selling out to his craft. Being completely dedicated to his music. About Me:

Andrea Cristina Vilarino Gonzalez is a Soprano, Painter and Professional Makeup Artist that loves SFX and Zombie Makeup Blood. Her makeup career has been very successful over the past 8 years. In 2016, she won first place in the Jose Cuervo Diaz de los Muertos Makeup Competition with her sugar skull makeup. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theater. Andrea is from Ponce, Puerto Rico but now resides in Jacksonville, FL. She studied in Colegio Ponceño, Class of 2015. Andrea spent 5 years in Coro de Niños as the lead soprano in her choir. She currently performs for weddings and Latino Christian Churches in San Agustin every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Andrea’s favorite roles include Terk in Tarzan, Joy stepsister in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Christine Daee in Phantom of the Opera in Puerto Rico. She was a featured performer in SnowWhite in the Boardwalk Band; Peter Pan and Wendy; Robin Hood the Comedy Musical; Under Pressure, in the Perla Theatre in Ponce, Puerto Rico. She was also featured in Weird Romance, Children of Eden, Spring Awakening, Urientown, Aida and Into the Woods at Jacksonville University. Best performance that Andrea did outside of JU was at Player by the Sea in “In the Heights” as Daniella, directed by Joe Kemper.

She also works for Build a Bear Workshop entertaining t. Andrea sang for Rene Cruz collection of Formal Fantasy, “Bring me to Life” for the South Fashion Week in Puerto Rico. Andrea’s main goal is provide the best quality and covers of music to give others the confidence to express themselves in various ways grow music or arts.

  1. What makes you and your work unique?
    • We began the first ever choir, in the area to take singer from all different backgrounds and schools to come together and create music.
  2. Do you have a brand or artist statement?
    • Yes. Our brand is to Enriching lives one note at a time.
  3. Do you have a mission vision?
    • Yes, “The mission of the Pensacola Children’s Chorus is to provide quality music education and performance to include both classical choral training and musical theatre to enrich the lives of children from all religious, racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Through its musical activities, the Pensacola Children’s Chorus helps to foster the personal and social growth of its members and promotes their sense of self-esteem, accomplishment, and pride.”
  4. Do you have career goals laid out for the next 5-10 years?
    • Yes. We hope that the new artistic director continues to grow what we began almost thirty years ago.
  5. What do you do and what are you doing?
    • We are currently retired for directing. We do workshops and conferences all around the country, as well as continue to write music.
  6. How are you connecting and building audiences and how do you market to them?
    • We worked with children, so we connect with their schools, and parents. We connect with the local news studio, and newspaper to advertise for all the productions.
  7. What opportunities are you on the lookout for?
    • We hope that our alumni grow as performers, and everyday people as well has watched the program we started grow and make us proud.
  8. Did you look at someone else’s career to make a path for your own and if so, what was it? 
    • No. We were both teachers, singers, and wrote music. We wanted to create a program that would change young singers lives and be around for many years to come.
  9. How do you fund your work?
    • We fund our work from tuition from members, as well as many sponsors and donors.
  10. How did you initially get funding? 
    • We received a loan to begin our vision. From there we got sponsor who would help fund our program.

    • Best of the Coast, Chorus America, American Choral Directors Association, Florida Vocal Association, Florida Music Education Association, American for the Arts.

What is your unique gift? – Do you believe in it enough to invest everything you have in it?

My unique gift is my ability to disrupt the status quo. By doing things my own way I bring new ideas to the floor, challenge pre-established rules and conditions, and present a confidence that exudes through my actions, music and my work. 

What difference are you trying to make in the world? – How passionate are you about doing this?

The mark I want to leave on the world has always and will remain the same; I want to make people dance! As odd and cliché as that sounds that’s all I really want. I want to make people feel good. I want to write music that becomes the soundtrack to people’s lives, create experiences and opportunities for people so they can in turn create the life that they always dreamed about. 

How do you define success for yourself? – What challenges do you face in order to create success?

Success to me is a feeling rather than something tangible. I am successful when I am making progress big or small. The goal is to always better than day before. We are constantly faced with obstacles during the journey but the ability to overcome those trials, re-strategize, and being able to tell the tale is the real reward. 

What is career vision and a mission?

 A career vision is where one sees themselves in a few years and what they hope to achieve. It is knowing your core values, establishing your goals and staying on course. A mission is a concise statement that describes one’s goals but more importantlyputting action behind the statement. 

Can you innovate and create value and successfully communicate that value to intended audiences?

Yes, I do believe I can accomplish such. My ethnic background (West-Indian), and the experiences I have had growing up in an environment much different from many of my peers allows me to view situations from diverse perspectives, provide new and innovative ideas, and appeal to audience by introducing the different genres of music that I have been influenced by into my production and performing engagements. 

Do you have a positive attitude?

Yes, I do because I am a firm believer of the saying “What is meant to be will always find its way.” Growing up in the Caribbean the virtues of our elders became ours; those of which were to be kind to everyone and in everything you do always have faith. Moving to the mainland I kept my virtues the same. Having a positive attitude and a corresponding personality has opened doors for me in the entertainment industry and will most likely continue in the near future. 

Have you set your goals? What is your road map to success? Can you set inspiring and realistic goals?

I have both long and short term goals set, how I plan to achieve them is a where the road map gets blurred; the best thing I have learned over the years is to just start and things will begin to come together. The word “realistic” has no power nor does it exist in my vocabulary. When the topic of realism is discussed the inner child/creative dies. Hence, I try to set inspiring goals, ones that will elevate me to new heights, challenge me to relinquish fear and dissolve the bubble I tend to reside in from time to time. Having a vision board makes my goals clearer and holds me accountable to things I want to accomplish. 

Do you have and/or acquire the necessary expertise to actualize your vision?

I am in the process of doing so. While I may not be a finished product the experiences I have had along with the courses I am currently enrolled in will take me one step closer. I am becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. 

What are your priorities? Can you set priorities?

Yes, I can set priorities but sometimes I have a hard time following them. I am young and sometimes it becomes difficult to find a balance between my social and professional life. My number one priority right now is to finish school. While completing my degree I am learning to make myself and my future a top priority and self-invest. 

What opportunities are you looking for? What opportunities are you creating or intend to create? 

I am looking for opportunities to write and produce for artist or just be a part of the creative process in bringing their ideas to life. I am also looking for an opportunity to elevate other artist careers. I would love to have a conversation with industry executives whose career visions align with mine.

How comfortable are you with uncertainty? What risks are you willing to take?

I am very comfortable with being uncomfortable. The past couple years of my life have been filled with uncertainty, from moving to the states, adapting to new culture, to spending the summer working without compensation in a recording studio so I can gain knowledge with experienced professionals. The risk I have taken in recent years have prepared me for anything. I willing to move to a new city, adapt to my surroundings if it means that I can fulfill my dreams.  

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

The past couple of months especially have been dedicated to consistency and discipline. So, when faced with challenges I always take time to relax my mind, evaluate the situation, and re-strategize. If it is something I have a vast amount of interest in I always persevere. This mainly because I do not enjoy losing. 

What experience have you learned the most from?

I cannot say there is one experience that I learned a lot from rather a culmination of events that lead to a “Ah Ha” moment. Within the last year there have been drastic changes to the life that I have known so well. These experiences have taught me that I am a lot stronger than I think I am and it is time to start getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. 

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

I am bringing my vision to life by investing in myself. If I do not take a risk when it comes to my career and future who will? I am actively taking steps every day to get better in my field of interest. I am listening to new music, conversing with people who are actively doing what I want to do, reading the articles, and perfecting my craft. In turn, I am seeing progress.

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

I am excellent when it comes to putting stuff into context and adjusting to changes in my environment. Although I can give many examples the best one I have experienced is having my island and my home destroyed after two category 5 hurricanes in 2017. Having to go back home over the holidays to a place that did not have power or running water in certain areas, torn families, communities, poor health care facilities made me realize how privileged I am and how I have taken things for granted in the past. There was no one to blame for the natural disaster rather I had to adjust to a new way a life and rebuild. That experience set precedence for the years to come. 

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in there past year or three?

My plan to grow at a steady pace is to continue studying the masters in the field and take risk.  I plan to be more efficient with my time and produce more content. By doing that I can have more to bring to the table and improve steadily. 

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

This is something I probably have the greatest challenge doing. I have always had trouble asking anyone for anything (it may be a cultural thing). In the past, there were projects that I needed monetary support from the community; I left that part to my team. 

How are you inspiring others to join and/or support your mission in order to create a financially sustainable enterprise that allows you to live your gift and contribute something valuable to society? – If you aren’t currently, how do you intend to?

Currently I am not doing so, however I plan to by writing business proposals to gain funding from companies and people who can finance my projects. I will do it in a way that both parties can benefit from the endeavor. I will paint my vision to my audience so they can see what I see and be inspired to also be great.

Andrew Mowatt has devoted his life to the study and refining of classical piano and its repertoire. Through the pursuit of higher learning and community engagement his mantra has become a vision through which he aspires to nurture and inspire the art culture of today’s day. Faith, Art, Music=FAM.   • “Dorothy Miranda “Dodie” Clark[6] is an English singer-songwriter, author, and YouTuber from Epping, Essex. Clark is known for her piano and ukulele covers, as well as her original songs. She has over 160 videos, over 1.8M subscribers, and over 250 million views on her main channel (as of February 2019).[4] On her side channel, she has 350+ videos, over 900K subscribers, and over 128 million views.”
  • What makes you and your work unique?
    • Her work is very honest and open about mental illness. She is not afraid to discuss how she is feeling and is constantly creating art based around her feelings .
  • Do you have a brand or artist statement?
    • Her artist statement overall would be to make people feel as though as though they belong. And the thoughts they have are normal and common within our generation.
  • Do you have a mission or vision?
    • To keep touring and making music, reaching out to as many people as she can.
  • Do you have career goals laid out for the next 5-10 years?
    • Hopefully produce more Youtube videos and keep writing more music, she wants to release at least 2 new EP’s/ maybe an album. She would would like to tour in even move countries and bigger venues.
  • What do you do and what are you doing?
    • Mainly she is a You-tuber, On youtube she is a singer-song writer, she is always creating new content, at least a video a week. Like stated, before she is a Mental Health enthusiast, she loves to make content exposes her mental health and share her overall feelings.
  • How are you connecting and building audiences and how do you market to them?
    • Like stated before, she is very open with her feelings, she is not afraid to speak about all subjects from her sexuality to her mental. Just being herself is a big way that she connects to people. She tends to market to people her age, this is mainly through people on youtube. She has done various collabs allowing her to gain exposer.
  • What opportunities are you on the lookout for?
    • Opportunities that allow her to be her self and connect to people who would benefit from hearing her music.
  • Did you look at someone else’s career to make a path for your own and if so, what was it? 
    • Many artist in the youtube (and outside) community have inspired Dodie to do work of her own. These artist include Tessa Violet and Orla Gartland (Other youtubers) . They are independent females in the music industry, they are also advocates for mental health and have inspired her to be great.
  • How do you fund your work?
    • Most of her funding comes from where she started, Youtube.
  • How did you initially get funding?
    • She started Youtube when I was younger so her parents helped her get a Camera and mic, and I grew from there.
    • She did have a few part time jobs that helped pay the bills as she grew older.
  • What networks or organizations do you belong to and which ones have helped you the most?
    • She is apart of almost all the networks as of now, but when she was starting out Youtube was her “Go-To”. Youtube allowed her to grew a great Fanbase, which is still very dependable to this Day.

My artist case study will be on Andre Watts the 1st African American concert pianist to achieve international super stardom. In March of 2018 I was able to contact Mr Watts through a contemporary of Dr Watkins named Richard Alston. In an email interview he offered me a residency if i was ever in Indiana were he is currently a professor and with encouragement quoted Philippians 4:13 “[You]I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
  • What makes you and your work unique? During his early career Mr Watts signed a long-term exclusive contract with CBS Records and PBS. So along side his concert schedule he reached audiences across the US through television. This is just another avenue through which to expand my own developing vision.
  • Do you have a brand or artist statement? Mr Watts has a vision which I very much desire to emulate in my own career. My artist statement would sound something like, “Inspiring and nurturing young minds of the future through music.” He is a representative member of the AAREG (African American Registry). This is the largest database resource of African American heritage in the world. Interestingly, this organization partners with TV programs and University’s to promote and gain more data regarding the development of young black artists.
  • Do you have a mission or vision? My mission or vision would be through the use of youth programs, teacher preparation and curriculum reform inspire and nurture young promising musicans.
  • Do you have career goals laid out for the next 5-10 years? Yes many! To implement giving young African American youths a voice I’ve determined to volunteer locally with churches and after school programs which help student in lower income areas become more successful and well rounded individuals. In this scope I am able to take what I’ve learned at the University to give students and parents a greater sense of purpose and unity. I’ve just started an internship with the School of Fine Arts in Mandarin through which I will begin teaching my own piano students after a few weeks of shadowing another teacher. Within the next 5-10 years I plan on honing my skills as a classical interpretor and becoming a more qualified and versatile teacher of music.
  • What do you do and what are you doing? I am currently also an avid volunteer at Shands and Uf Proton therapy center here in Jacksonville. Through this endeavor I’ve met numerous prominent members of Jacksonville through which I’ve built a catalogue of contacts which will help me network and plan venues in the future. The relationships I’ve built at the hospital have proven to be indispensable.
  • How are you connecting and building audiences and how do you market to them? Primarily and, since I am still a full time student, I am building an audience through my volunteer work in nursery homes and Hospitals. However I know a few prominent musicians around town that are excitedly awaiting my schedule to open up a bit more so i can pursue more exposure and a greater audience. Another thing, i am starting is exploring other genre’s such as jazz and cultivating my own improvised style of piano playing.
  • Did you look at someone else’s career to make a path for your own and if so, what was it? There were numerous musicians I wished to emulate whether it be based on the expressionism of their playing or success in the respective fields. One of these is a pianist by the name of Valentina Lisitsa, she became the most famous youtube pianist of our day. Her playing is much more expressive than most pianists and her use of good recording equipment is something that I know i desire and need to promote myself. Another musician i use as an example is a prominent jazz musician by the name of Myles Jaye. Jay has a background in classical violin playing. I had the privilege of meeting him at his Bar. I played piano for him and we hit it off as friends, next thing I know I’m being interviewed with cameras and videos.
  • How do you fund your work? I will fund my work by working retail and food service. I find that at the moment the most realistic option for me to maintain a balance is to understand that I’m not at the point in my musical career to where my music and entrepreneurship can support putting food on the table and paying rent. Never mind my overarching vision. Realistically I’ve had to yield to that and look for promotions outside of the musical sphere.
  • How did you initially get funding? I initially got funding interestingly through members of the church who heard my playing after a church service. Inspired by my talent, people of the church organized themselves, and provided me initial residency and funded me in my endeavor to audition as a music student at Jacksonville University.
  • What networks or organizations do you belong to and which ones have helped you the most? The organizations I am a part of are Arlington United Methodist church and the Ville church and they’ve helped me the most to fight the ambiguity and discouragement I face about my gift of music. These organizations have helped me but not nearly as much as my University professors. The professors at Jacksonville have seen a potential in me that I haven’t always seen in myself, and that has helped me the most to believe in the dream I was given.
