Landon Networking I

Last week we (the class) participated in a triangulation exercise during an art exposition at the campus of Jacksonville University. The goal was to use art as a gateway to a conversation with an individual, or group and practice networking. I met a freshman art history major named, Iris. She is from China, and I forgot her origin name. However, she goes by Iris. She’s new to America and is still on the fence about how she feels about being in such a new place. We discussed our interests and aspirations and to my surprise, she was a fan of jazz music. Not much came from the conversation except small talk. The second individual I was able to converse with was a gentleman by the name of, Jarry Berry. Jarry is a musician and producer. I asked him about how he got started it. He’s a multi-instrumentalist and we exchanged contacts! We discussed similar interests in music and different aspects of the changing music industry.

What is your unique gift? – Do you believe in it enough to invest everything you have in it?

I am creative, humble, intelligent, kind, giving, focused, determined, a hard worker, and responsible. I comprise in one package what many people do not have as a whole. Not many people have the ability to go the extra mile and make it work no matter how hard it is like I do. I believe in myself and I believe in my gifts. I believe in them enough to invest everything I have.

What difference are you trying to make in the world? – How passionate are you about doing this?

I want to inspire others. I want to be able to use my talents for good. For fundraising, to point out an awareness. I want to be able to donate to any cause or charity I believe in. I am very passionate about doing all of that. I really want to successfully do it all and inspire others to do the same. I think about it and it makes me happy.

How do you define success for yourself? – What challenges do you face in order to create success?

That I am noted as an inspiration to others. Living comfortably from doing what I love to do as a job. I face the challenge that thousands of people want to do the same thing and there are not many open spots. Money can be a challenge when I need it to get to somewhere that can bring me a step forward to a possible success.

What is career vision and a mission?

A career vision is what I inspire to pursue and have as my job title. What I see myself doing for a huge part of my life. A mission what I do to get and achieve my career vision.

Can you innovate and create value and successfully communicate that value to intended audiences?

I believe so. If it is something I have spent time on and truly believe in and am passionate about how could I not be successful in sharing that value with others.

Do you have a positive attitude?

Yes. A huge thing for me is to be able to find the good, to find the light in everything. I love being positive and happy and I love sharing that with the people I love most. Having a positive attitude is important in my book when it comes to searching for success.

Have you set your goals? What is your road map to success? Can you set inspiring and realistic goals?

I have set certain goals. After graduation, I want to have an agent no less than a year out. I want to have worked or continue to work in my first professional job. I think my road map to success is to be constantly auditioning and try to go from contract to contract and not be unemployed for too long of a period in between. I want to have built strong and reliable connections that I can trust to go to for work or for guidance. I also want to continue to learn and grow in my abilities as an actress. I want to continuously be evolving.

Do you have and/or acquire the necessary expertise to actualize your vision?

I believe I do. I have the passion, the talent, the personality and the drive to actualize my visions and what I want for myself in the future.

What are your priorities? Can you set priorities?

My priority as of right now is to learn and consume as much knowledge and growth in skill as I can before I graduate. My priority is to audition and perform anywhere I can and land a job.

What opportunities are you looking for? What opportunities are you creating or intend to create?

Anything new! I want to workshop new works. I want to experience the life of an amusement theme park performer. I want the opportunity and go and sing for a concert out of state. I want the kind of opportunities that help me learn more about myself and challenge myself. I create opportunities for myself by going to auditions. Going to an audition opens a door for possibilities and a possible new opportunity. I make sure to meet and bond with new people that can maybe send me an opportunity my way in the future.

How comfortable are you with uncertainty? What risks are you willing to take?

The profession I want is full of uncertainty. Will I get the job, how long will I have this job, will I have a job after this first job is finished? It is risky, and I am okay with that. It always sounds crazy, but this uncertain profession is what I want, and I will do what it takes to have it. Audition after audition after audition I will be there.

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

I will question whether or not to walk away, but in the end I go and I persevere.

What experience have you learned the most from?

How important networking can be in this field. Networking is a beautiful thing. I always knew it was important, but I never went through it personally and I went through it this past summer. I landed a lead role in a show, because the director has worked with me before, so he already knew what I can do. That I was special, unique. Because of this show I met and bonded with so many wonderful people in the cast and crew. The kind of people that I would help out if I ever made it big time and I know they would do the same if our roles were reversed. In the community people are beginning to know my name now. People have reached out to me because they want to work with me and I would love to with them. It is so exciting.

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

I take classes to work on my craft, to perfect it, expand it. I make sure to meet new people. I work twice as hard at what I do. I practice, practice, practice, and I try, try, try.

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

I believe I put things into context and can easily respond to the changes in my environment well. I deal with situations like this in theatre all the time. In class I will learn about different techniques in acting. I would work on it in class and perfect it to the best of my ability.   When I’m in a show I take what I have learned in class and apply them to the roles I play on stage.

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in the past year or three?

The plan is to continue to practice and learn as much as I can. To meet and create bonds with new people constantly. To continue to have a positive and energized mindset. I have grown in confidence in myself in the past year. I feel I have met the right people this past year that have helped and supported me to work even harder and to trust that this what I am meant to do. I got to work on new things all the time and it was a blessing because I got to practice the skills I already have and expand them, but I also learned new ones I did not realize I had before. My ability as an actress was always being tested.

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

I will always offer help. I like helping others. Personally, it takes me a bit to ask for help, only because I do not want to feel needy. But I do know that it is important to ask for help when I need it so I will ask.

How are you inspiring others to join and/or support your mission in order to create a financially sustainable enterprise that allows you to live your gift and contribute something valuable to society? – If you aren’t currently, how do you intend to?

I intend to continue to work hard, learn, and be kind. I will offer help and I will share my own experiences and feelings with others. I will evolve with any changing environments. I will spread positivity whenever and wherever I can.

Zoe Rosas Networking 1

First, I am not the type to ever really start a conversation with a stranger. I like to keep to myself a lot of the time, but that does not necessarily mean I will not talk. When it comes to theatre and music I do like to converse, but I am rarely the one to start the conversation. If a person comes up to me and starts a conversation, I will gladly join in and start to converse back. It is just that one step before speaking that gets me nervous. The action of walking up to that person and saying the first word. I think it is because I fear rejection, or I fear the person I choose to talk with is not kind. As an actress who wants to perform for a living, I will face rejection more times than yes, so I need to get used to it and overcome it. I guess this exercise is the starting of truly overcoming it, as well as learning to connect and network with new people. Honestly, my goal is to be able to go up to a stranger and successfully have a good conversation with them.

Walking to the art gallery, I was thinking quite a bit about how I would start a conversation with someone whilst looking at an art piece. I was uncomfortable and nervous in the beginning of course, so when I got to the gallery, I chose to use one of my five conversations as a practice run with a friend. I walked through to the second room and was looking at a poster of cows and machines. At first, I didn’t see the whole picture, so I asked Esther what it was we were looking at, and she explained to me that it shows a circle of life for these group of cows. They are being raised and eventually are used to make shoes through a factory. The poster shows the process repeating. She and I conversed back and forth on where the process started on the poster and figured out what each step led to. I quickly realized conversing on an art piece was not as hard as I thought it would be. It felt like any old regular conversation I have had before.

After grabbing some snacks, I walked back into the gallery ready to complete this exercise. I started off looking at the art piece in the first room on the left. Heavily confused on the theme and what it was, I took a deep breath and asked the person next to me what he thought it was. Thankfully, He was on the same page I was and that made me feel comfortable! I always imagine that everyone just gets the artwork, but it was nice to see that there are people like me staring at an artwork and thinking “what is that.” We both examined the piece and pointed out things we knew. For instance, on the top of the piece was a small pink diagram of what we believed to be a female reproductive system. From that, we both had this sense that the art is deriving from a scientific kind of view and the rest of the piece displayed different parts of that reproductive system.

I moved back into the second room and looked around the room trying to piece it all together. I noticed these two ladies looking at the art piece with a cow tongue and saw one of them was writing down notes in her notebook. She was not the first person I saw writing down something in a notebook, so I was intrigued and went up to her and asked her if she was writing down notes on the art piece in front of us. She looked up and said yes. She needed to write down critiques on the art for her art class. I explained to her that I was interested in her opinion of the art since for me, I find it hard to analyze and grasp the meaning of artworks in general when I look at them. She started off by telling me that art can mean whatever I wanted it to mean. Then, before she shared with me her thoughts, she cautiously asked me if I was the artist. I chuckled and said no. She shared with me her opinions on the exhibit and we soon connected on the fact that the art in the gallery was not our style. We exchanged details on what our major was, and where we are from. I learned she is a nursing major, but also has an interest in interior design. I also shared with her the reason as to why I started our conversation. She thought the exercise was a very cool idea. She believes being able to communicate with anyone is important, so she was glad a professor here assigned it as an assignment. She is from Boston and explained to me that most people there do not openly communicate to strangers, so she is glad to be down here because it’s the opposite. I thanked her for being kind as she was the first stranger I talked to that night and gladly said it was no problem and told me to not worry because people want to talk.

I began to look around again and I found the artist of the second room and thought who better to talk to then someone who is looking forward to talking about their work. He was standing by one of his pieces and I went up to him and asked him if he was indeed the artist and he confirmed that he was. I asked him about his art, what it was and if there was any sort of meaning to it. He explained his work to be like a diagram. He said he loves diagrams, and illustrations explaining how something works, etc. So, this room works like a teaching diagram. He pointed at one of his pieces and told me that the reason certain parts of it were painted with bright colors is because they can be taken off the art piece. He said it helps with storing the art, but it also highlights the idea of the diagram he is illustrating. He was nice and very passionate when he talked about his work.

I turned around and found myself facing the cow poster again and realized that even though none of the art in the gallery was my style, I liked the cow poster the most. For my fifth conversation, I noticed next to me was a classmate of mine who I do not socialize with looking at the poster. I waited a bit before I decided to look at him and ask him what his observation was on the poster. He pointed out something that I had not realized the first time I looked at this poster. That it looked like a thought bubble in someone’s head like in one of those cartoons. I jokingly told him how the thought bubble looks a little dirty because the rims of the cloud were green and fuzzy looking. He also had a glass of wine in his hand so, I asked him what kind of wine it was and what his favorite is. From that we learned that we have the opposite taste in wine. He prefers dry whereas I prefer sweet wine. Nonetheless, it was a pleasant conversation!

This exercise was weird for me because I was forced to be out of my own comfort zone, however I learned that I can go up to someone and start a conversation with them in an area that is not my forte. Also, people can be nice! What worked best was beginning the conversation about the art and then noticing something about them, whether it was something they had on them or something they said and expanding the conversation from there. There was no rejection in the slightest at all that night. I am glad we did this, and I have a strong feeling it will benefit me in the future. What I hope to improve on next time is to not to think too much and just go and do right from the start. I do feel I am most suited for any sort of gathering that involves the subject of theatre. That is what I know best, and I love learning more about it and hearing thoughts on the subject. I have the best conversations with people after seeing a show. Everyone wants to talk and discuss after a show! I have never met, bonded and networked with more people than I have when I go to see a show. It’s awesome.

Learning Journal Assignment 1

What is your unique gift? – Do you believe in it enough to invest everything you have in it?

My unique gift or, in my case, gifts are not only being able to perform trumpet at a very prestigious level, but singing in a 1950’s crooner style with a live swing band, understanding technical theater aspects that go unnoticed by audiences and comprehending the importance of performing in a music theater orchestra pit and keeping time, tuning and balance with the singing individuals.

What difference are you trying to make in the world? – How passionate are you about doing this?

I am going to show that a musician is capable of so much more than one instrument or style of music because being a versatile and veritable musician requires an understanding of the work and effort needed to do every single aspect of creating music. I am beyond passionate about this as I push myself daily to excel and surpass the basic understandings of what it means to be a musician by auditioning for singing roles in musicals, strive to learn new techniques in the theater, apply for graduate schools to learn more about my primary instrument and open new doors to avenues of music I’m just now being introduced to.

How do you define success for yourself? – What challenges do you face in order to create success?

I define success for myself as the point at which I know I have done everything in my power to make what I’ve been working towards as refined and complete as possible. If I haven’t shown off every ounce of talent in something I do, then it is something that I am dispassionate about. The challenges can range from time constraints, having too many ideas to include, or simply not having enough information to make the ideas all come together and having holes in the final form of what I am trying to complete.

What is career vision and a mission?

My career vision is to be sitting on the stage of the New York Symphony Hall, performing trumpet as a stable career, no other job, with the finest musicians of the country, arguably this side of the world. My mission is to be the inspiration to the next generation of trumpet performers just as the previous generation has inspired me.

Can you innovate and creates value and successfully communicate that value to intended audiences?

Value in the sense of performance is always in the eye of the beholder. Currently, the director for the New York Philharmonic is viewed as a terrible maestro, but clearly someone had to have thought of him as worthy to direct the NYP. If value is created and equally shared amongst a large group of individuals it is then and only then successfully communicated.

Do you have a positive attitude?

In the workplace, yes, I do have a positive attitude. People do not desire to work with someone that has a poor attitude. To keep a job is to seem happy with said job. Catch me anytime outside of work, you’ll find my positivity to be hit or miss. Occupational hazard.

Have you set your goals? What is your road map to success? Can you set inspiring and realistic goals?

I have set my goals. My roadmap to success is to continue my education into a Master’s Degree in Performance and then set to auditioning and climbing the ladder of succession into my dream occupation. (See answer to question #4.) All of my goals are realistic and always have been. The roadmap leading to those goals changes over time as the map becomes more detailed the closer it is looked at.

Do you have and/or acquire the necessary expertise to actualize your vision?

I am in a constant state of forward progress, learning daily how to hone in my craft and how to be everything I have dreamed of being since I first started playing trumpet. If I don’t have the skills to accomplish something, I find a way to achieve the skills necessary to be successful.

What are your priorities? Can you set priorities?

My priorities are my education, my future, and my sanity. We all set priorities. My priority is to graduate undergrad and move directly to graduate school. For many people, a very high priority is making enough money to pay rent on time. Try to not prioritize that and see how that works out.

What opportunities are you looking for? What opportunities are you creating or intend to create?

I am looking for every opportunity to learn something new every single day. With that I intend to create a playing field where I can talk with someone in casual conversation and them be able to tell me something that I had never known before and I take away something important from that conversation.

How comfortable are you with uncertainty? What risks are you willing to take?

Uncertainty is perplexing and discomforting. Without it, though, we would all be too bold and full of ourselves, so finding a good balance of it is enough to drive individuals to ask the right questions. I am willing to risk little pieces of time for the right opportunities.

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

I always persevere. Challenges are made to be challenging, not impossible. If I faced every challenge and then walked away from it, I would have never learned anything in life. Challenges inspire personal growth, understanding, and greater appreciation of the world.

What experience have you learned the most from?

When I auditioned for NEC and Curtis and wasn’t accepted into either program I found where my talents and abilities truly were and re-grounded myself for learning to push myself even further into the next level of performance.

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

I am constantly practicing and revitalizing my performance aspects even when the trumpet isn’t on my face.

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

The first question is ambiguous. That depends… what’s being changed and how drastically?

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in there past year or three?

If I find myself in a rut I will reach out to others for advice, look to YouTube for inspiration from my favorite artists, take lessons with extremely talented and successful individuals and change the way I look at a situation. I have grown mentally in my understanding of music and my place in the music world.

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

I don’t even hesitate. If I have a question that needs an answer I know I cannot find on my own I reach out to anyone I feel confident in asking and attempt to learn as much as I can from them. I am always willing to offer help or advice. I found that I can be a good resource for teaching theory to those who need assistance and have shared plenty of tips and tricks with those that come to me for assistance.

How are you inspiring others to join and/or support your mission in order to create a financially sustainable enterprise that allows you to live your gift and contribute something valuable to society? – If you aren’t currently, how do you intend to?

Nobody has told me whether I’ve inspired him or her or not. If I already have and I’m just unaware, cool, but if I haven’t, I’ll keep doing what I do until I’ve inspired someone.

Taylor Neal Networking Assignment 1

I had a wonderful time at the art gallery opening. I enjoyed the artwork and the conversations I had with my peers and professors, and I met some new people. At the beginning of the event, I felt oddly anxious about inserting myself into conversations with strangers, but as soon as I began to triangulate and find common topics to share with people I haven’t met, it became easier and easier to start those conversations. I was talking to one of my classmates and overheard Dylan Collins, the visiting artist that created some of the sculptures, talking about his work and how he interpreted it. I waited for the opportunity to introduce myself and started asking him questions about his art. It was a short-lived conversation, and I didn’t tell him much about myself other than my name before another student began talking to him. I could have told him more about myself and what I do at JU, which could have made more of an impact.

It was really interesting to hear other students’ interpretation of the art because some students had a lot to say about it and it gave me a new perspective on the art. Other student’s did not like the pieces, which was also interesting to hear them explain why they disliked it.

I began a conversation with Professor Alex Willemin, but at first I didn’t think to ask him about potential classes a non-film major could take. I later talked to him again and introduced myself in more detail and asked him about the classes. He told me about taking an intro to film course before my last semester, so I could take an upper level film course my final semester. I am glad I made that connection because now he can put a face to my name when I follow up with him about those classes.

As I was leaving the event, I was wondering why it was so hard for me to initiate conversation when I first got there. I was anxious and didn’t talk much at the beginning, but I am glad I began to actively seek out conversation because it wasn’t hard or weird. It just took some motivation and intentional thinking, and I can still improve on being more comfortable with starting those conversations. By the end of this course, I hope to be able to feel more comfortable talking to anyone at any event, because that is a vital skill in networking and communications and can lead to many opportunities in the future!

Taylor Neal Learning Journal Assignment 1

Learning Journal Assignment 1

What is your unique gift? – Do you believe in it enough to invest everything you have in it?

I believe my unique gift is a combination of all of the skills I’ve acquired as a musician and as a producer. I’m a classically trained french horn player with a good concept of music theory and strong relative pitch. I am a guitarist that learned by ear at a very young age and I’ve picked up many other instruments along the way. I have been passionate about recording since I was about 15 years old and I’ve had experience recording many different styles of music, including rock, acoustic, jazz, electronic, and classical. I would invest everything I have in my gift because I know how passionate I feel towards creating music and the skills I’ve acquired so far add up to set me apart from other producers.

What difference are you trying to make in the world? – How passionate are you about doing this?

There is a feeling I get when I help others achieve their goals and it drives me to want to help as much as I can. I love helping people discover their sound to share with the world. I feel bad about myself when I’m not being creative or productive, and when I’m busy doing a lot of great things I feel amazing. This has it’s pro’s and con’s but I’ve learned that when i’m on top of things I feel more empowered and inspired to make an impact on myself and the people around me.

How do you define success for yourself? – What challenges do you face in order to create success?

I define success by how comfortable I am in the environment I’m in and financially. I want to be able to make enough money doing what I love to support a family and live in a place where I can feel like myself. There will be a lot of challenges I’ll face to get to this point. Financial stability will be one of them, especially if I make the majority of my income through freelance.

What is career vision and a mission?

Career vision is having a strong idea of how much time and money a career will have for an individual, backed up with research of real life examples and advice from real people who are currently in the profession making a living. Career mission is the goals an individual will set to reach the ideal place in that career.

Can you innovate and creates value and successfully communicate that value to intended audiences?

I feel like I am good at having an idea of what the intended audience is looking for and using my skills to achieve something close to what the audience wants. I think my creativity and innovation in music creating helps me get to that goal of presenting the audience what they want to hear, whether it’s with electronic composition or producing. I think in general I can do more research and preparation to know more about what the audience wants.

Do you have a positive attitude?

I believe that my positive attitude often gets in the way of my creative process. I’ve been raised to be a people pleaser and to be respectful of the people above me, but sometimes that stops me from forming my own opinion of artistic creation or communicating my artistic opinion to others to achieve a common goal. I think a positive attitude is vital in the creative process because it can be contagious and inspire a group of people, but I also think it is important to know how to communicate an idea without being afraid of hurting people’s feelings. Often I find myself caring too much of what other people will think of me and that holds me back from expressing myself artistically to the fullest extent.

Have you set your goals? What is your road map to success? Can you set inspiring and realistic goals?

I love setting short term goals for myself, but I tend to forget about the goals I set or have trouble holding myself accountable to them. I think I could take more time in setting long term goals and finding someone to hold me accountable to them. I think one of my goals is to become a better networker and communicator. That will shape my road map to success, because the skills I have can only take me so far if I can’t network to the fullest extent.

Do you have and/or acquire the necessary expertise to actualize your vision?

I think I am learning all of the steps to obtaining the necessary expertise to actualize my vision, but it’s up to me how far I go. If I take more time to do the research and network better, I will be in better shape to actualize my vision. If I just wait around to get a lucky break, I won’t go very far.

What are your priorities? Can you set priorities?

Some of my priorities include respecting the art and the artist in whatever medium that may be, organization, and communication. I think I am good at setting priorities but making them applicable in every aspect of my life is something that I could improve on.

What opportunities are you looking for? What opportunities are you creating or intend to create?

I’m looking for more networking opportunities within the music scene I affiliate myself in, as well as opportunities in areas I’m not as comfortable in. I’d like to start to get a better idea of how I’d like to promote myself and be more intentional with my conversations with people I’m networking with. This will lead to better opportunities in my future.

How comfortable are you with uncertainty? What risks are you willing to take?

I am not so much afraid of taking risks, but I am more afraid of how those risks will affect my future if I make a big mistake. I believe I am a humble and quick learner, but it is easy to assume I know how to do something even if I don’t really know everything about it.

When facing challenges, do you persevere or do you walk away?

I enjoy facing challenges that I think I can handle. More often than not I persevere, but that sometimes leads to me doing an incomplete job and not working to my fullest potential.

What experience have you learned the most from?

High pressure situations are the best teacher. Although the can bring along a lot of anxiety, I like the challenges that a high pressure situation can have and I like the rewarding feeling of overcoming those pressuring situations. An example of this is the Electroacoustic Barn Dance and the role I’ve played in the past. A lot of times there is no time to think about options, you have to just do what you know is right and be confident in your choices.

What actions are you taking to realize your vision? Are you consistently taking action?

Communicating with other people that share a similar vision is one way I take action to realize my vision. However it is not a consistent process and I can work on branching out more and doing more networking.

How well do you put things in context? Are you able to easily respond to changes in your environment? What’s your best example?

I am relatively easy going, so I do adapt to change fairly well. As an RA, we have to be able to be attentive and respond quickly to an ever changing environment.

What is your plan to continually grow and evolve? How have you grown or evolved in there past year or three?

I continue to grow and evolve exponentially as I get older. I have learned more about myself and the things I’m passionate about in the past year than I have my whole life, and I expect to continue this pattern of growth and realization both personally and technically with the experiences I have.

How easy is it for you to reach out to others to ask for support and to offer help?

I have a very hard time asking for help. I feel like a burden and I feel like I’m letting myself down and the people around me down when I need to ask for help. This often leads to a lack of delegating tasks and it holds me back from experiencing my fullest potential.

How are you inspiring others to join and/or support your mission in order to create a financially sustainable enterprise that allows you to live your gift and contribute something valuable to society? – If you aren’t currently, how do you intend to?

I intend to inspire others to support what I’m passionate about after I have a better understanding of myself and what I want to do with my skills. Right now I’m sort of all over the place and it holds me back from excelling at one specific thing. I need to do more research on what it means to be financially sustainable with the skills I currently hold, and I hope to be inspired to do more of that throughout this course.
